Trump asks judge to lift gag order after conviction

Former US President Donald Trump has asked the judge who oversaw his criminal trial on charges related to paying hush money to an adult film star to lift a gag order on the case. This request comes after Trump was convicted last week.

Before the trial began in April, Judge Juan Merchán limited Trump's public statements about jurors, witnesses and others involved in the case, following previous comments that prosecutors described as threatening.

In a public letter dated June 3 and made public Tuesday, Trump's defense attorney Todd Blanche argued:

"Now that the trial has concluded, the concerns expressed by the Government and the Court do not justify continuing to restrict President Trump's First Amendment rights."

Last week, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of all 34 counts he faced of falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election in connection with a sexual encounter she claims to have had with him.

Trump, who is a Republican candidate for the 2024 elections, has denied having had sexual relations with Daniels and has promised to appeal the conviction.
