At least four dead and 18 injured in a shooting in the Five Points South area of Alabama

At least four people have died and 18 others were injured after a shooting late Saturday night into Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, where authorities are working to track down the shooters and determine the motive behind the crime.

"No one is in custody. We believe different shooters fired into a crowd. Our officers are working to confirm whether they approached the victims on foot or in a vehicle, and we need the public's help," said Truman Fitzgerald, a member of the Birmingham Police Department, during a press conference.

Officers found the bodies of two men and one woman at the scene, and a third man later died at the hospital from gunshot wounds. This incident occurred in the Five Points South area, known for its bustling nightlife.

Additionally, at least four people are critically injured and their lives are currently in danger, according to authorities.

The police department believes the shooting "was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident in which several victims were caught in the crossfire," but they are still trying to determine the motive and specific targets of the criminals who acted outdoors.

Photos and videos posted on social media after the shooting showed at least two individuals apparently injured on the ground outside, along with the desperate cries of people waiting for medical assistance.

"Rest assured that we will do everything possible to ensure that we discover, identify, and capture whoever was responsible for taking advantage of our people," Fitzgerald said, attempting to reassure the public after this shooting, the second in the city of 250,000 residents this year.

He also urged businesses with security cameras in the area to review their footage and provide any relevant content for the investigation.

So far this year, there have been more than 400 mass shootings in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed.
