Biden says "too many journalists" have died in the Gaza Strip

As part of World Press Freedom Day, US President Joe Biden stated that “too many journalists, mostly Palestinians” have lost their lives during Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip.

"On this day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of journalists and media workers around the world, who risk everything in search of the truth," said the president, highlighting the seriousness of the current situation.

In this way, the president announced that he will take action in the coming weeks in response to the global repression of press freedom, declaring it “a serious threat to national security,” and authorizing visa bans against those who silence the press.

Biden mentioned that the year 2023 was one of the deadliest for journalists in recent years, attributing part of this to the war in Gaza, where many journalists, mostly Palestinians, died.

The US president also noted that more than 300 journalists around the world were jailed last year, the highest number in decades.

These statements come after the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield, stated that “journalists around the world are intimidated and harassed,” and that “too often they are violently attacked and arbitrarily detained, simply for speaking the truth.” .
