In a context of extreme tension over the possibility of a land invasion of Rafah by Israel, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated this Sunday that “the United States is the only country” that has the capacity to prevent such an event in the extreme south. of the Gaza Strip.
In his participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Riyadh, Abbas demanded that Israel stop its plans to invade Rafah, under the pretext of eliminating Hamas from the Strip, and asked Washington to ask Tel Aviv not to carry out such an invasion.
“What Israel will do in the coming days is invade the city of Rafah, because all the Palestinians from Gaza have moved there.
It only takes one small attack to force everyone to leave Palestine and we will witness the greatest catastrophe in the history of the Palestinian people,” he warned.
Likewise, Abbas urged the international community to fulfill its obligations and recognize the State of Palestine, in the same way they recognized Israel, as a fundamental step to end the historic conflict between both parties.
The special meeting of the WEF, which will last until tomorrow, Monday, will focus on the war in the Gaza Strip and will feature the participation of “key actors” in mediating the conflict, such as the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the foreign ministers of Egypt and Qatar, among others.
