A group of 14 Democratic congressmen have asked President Joe Biden's government this Tuesday to take executive action immediately on the United States border with Mexico.
House representatives from California, New Hampshire, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kansas and Minnesota, among others, urged the White House in a letter to take “steps to restore order at the southern border and fix our failed “migration system.”
The letter led by Congresswoman Angie Craig, of Minnesota, and Mike Levin, of California, emphasizes that the current situation on the country's southern border is “unsustainable.”
The Biden administration has faced criticism over its immigration policy and border management from Republicans, who promoted impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, responsible for border management.
Former President Donald Trump in his campaign for the November elections has also attacked the US president by ensuring that the Democrat keeps “the borders open.”
However, Biden and the Democrats have defended themselves by blaming the Republican Party for the collapse of a bipartisan project that would restructure the asylum system and give the government more power to manage the border.
In the letter, the Democratic congressmen made reference to the failed attempt.
“With Republicans playing politics on border security, it is time for your administration to act,” he reads.
“We urge you to use all tools at your disposal, including executive action, to better address security at the southern border, ban illicit fentanyl, and enable orderly legal migration,” the Democrats added.
Immigration has become one of the central issues in the race for the presidency of the United States, with more than 28% of Americans pointing it out as the country's main problem, according to a Gallup poll published in February.
